After witnessing our second reunion show, hardcore anarcho-punks and old muckers CONFLICT, invited TOY FACTORY to appear on the bill at one of their London gigs. Here's the review...
Conflict, Toy Factory & Mise En Scene, The Underworld London 14/2/4 review by Pete.
The Labrat C*nts had
unfortunately not been able to play the gig due to a nasty
hernia incident that drummer Nathan is recovering from. That
left Toy Factory to come on next and this was a band
whose name sounded familiar but then again wasn’t. At
first I guess I was getting confused with Toy Story and then
Steve helpfully asked me if they were the ones that did
Nelly The Elephant. That aside I certainly wasn’t prepared
for this band. It was like being transported into the
Batcave in the 80s as they grooved away with some
Psychobilly gothdom. The singer Punky looked like a cross
between Dave Vanian and Roy Orbison and funnily enough that
is exactly what he sounded like as well. They did really
look a bit too old to throw themselves energetically around
the stage and I really wondered if they had turned up on the
wrong day, as they would be perfect support
to the Misfits next week. Yet it all worked rather well, as
there were distinct moments of Dead Kennedy guitar work and
the spirit of old American bands such as D.I. (I was waiting
for a cover of Richard Hung Himself). Instead of that
particular ditty we got I'm Not Your Steppin Stone and when
the singer finished it with the words, “thank you very
much” it was like Elvis had entered the building. One
thing is for certain Toy Factory created one hell of a party
atmosphere and for all you ancient punks out there thinking
of getting married, this lot would be the perfect wedding
reception band.
